During my high school days, I had the pleasure of collecting and exchanging stamps for a hobby. It was indeed a very rewarding past time for me since I always felt like I was acquiring unique pieces of treasures whenever a new stuff came my way. What excited me most, however, was when the new addition was acquired through “hard labor”, like I had to do some research or assignment for a senior student in order to obtain an allegedly rare stamp that was completely strange and unfamiliar in the group of collectors where I belong. Boy, it was really gratifying. I managed to continue the hobby with more passion and sense until now but still fairly puzzled on what benefits do I get from being a self-proclaimed philatelist, though it is evident to me that I am absolutely enjoying the flair and tricks of the trade.

Hobbies reduce stress, says Alice Domar, director of the Mind/Body Center for Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School. They distract you from everyday worries: If you’re focused on the pottery you’re making, you can’t fret about work, says Domar. And knitting, or anything requiring repetitive motion, elicits the relaxation response, a feeling of overall serenity, marked by lowered blood pressure.

Likewise, hobbies provide a calming sense of control, says Domar, and research suggests this strengthens immunity. You may have little say at work, but when you’re woodworking, you’re in charge. You get the credit — and satisfaction — of a job well done.[1]
We recognize that physical activity extends life, but less active recreations, like cognitive relaxation, are healthy as well. A study published in the The New England Journal of Medicine found that those who engaged in cognitive leisure activities, such as reading books or newspapers, writing for pleasure, doing crossword puzzles, playing board games or cards, participating in organized group discussions, and playing musical instruments, were likely to decrease risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia in the elderly.

Hobbies like painting and other forms of artistic expressions are likewise demonstrated to have some influence on enhancing our well-being. This was eloquently pointed out in the article The Healing Power of Art written by Christina Grant. It emphasizes that if creative forces or energy inherently present in human body are repressed or held inside they will likely manifest negatively or take other forms such as depression, anxiety, anger, rage, cysts, tumors, and other growths in the body.

These combined evidences clearly suggest that hobbies in whatever form have to be kept or cultivated in order to enjoy good health and life as a whole.

By the way, do not forget, though, that blogging, which is a form of “writing for pleasure”, is a cognitive type of hobby and is certainly beneficial to our health.

What do you think? Do you agree with these findings? Do you have a hobby that you think is not worth holding on?

Feel free to share your thoughts.

The Valentina's Day

It goes back to the times of Ancient Rome. One of the characters we often see on Valentine’s Day is Cupid. He was the son of Venus, the goddess of love. He shoots people with arrows of love. When a man and a woman are hit by his arrows, they will fall in love.
Today people celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14. Men and women who are in love give each other gifts. The most popular gifts include flowers (especially roses) and chocolates. Couples may also go to a restaurant for a very nice dinner or plan something else romantic.

In the United States, Valentine’s Day is not just for lovers. Children make special Valentine’s cards for their classmates. Families and friends may give candy or other small gifts to each other. It can be a fun day.

With so many different species of animal found all around the world, it is no wonder that there are so many tales and stories of animals that have been put down to being simply legends, but are they? Here we will continue to look at mythical creatures from around the world, by looking into the world of the mermaid…
The mermaid is a mythical creature that has been the subject of many stories and tales, as the mermaids had the most fastinating trait of being part fish and part human. The mermaid is seen to befish below the wasit and human above. The first known tales about mermaids appeared as early as 1,000 BC, and have continued throughout history still being popular today. The most recent and possibly the most well-known mermaid was the story of The Little Mermaid that was made popular by Disney, but the mermaid is thought to have originated when ancient philosophers believed that humans had descended from fish and saw the mermiad as the half-way point.

There are different views from around the world as to what the intentions of the mermaids were. It is commonly known that mermaids would sing, with their voices having a similar tone to that of a siren. However, some people believe that the mermiads sing to lure people into the water, who are then drowned by the mermaids taking them to their underwater kingdom. Others believe that the mermaids would actually help those who had been stranded at sea, and would take the people to the safety of the shore whilst singing to them in order to help them relax. Many hoaxes have arisen that have fooled people into thinking that a real mermaid had been found, none however, have been

Saz
The Saz is the grandfather of the Greek Bouzouki. It’s originated in Central Asia where Turks lived before their westward migration. Like the guitar in Spain and the bouzouki in Greece, the Saz is the most popular stringed instrument in Turkey. Although similar in shape to the Greek Bouzouki, the construction, size and sound of the Saz is different. You need a baglama saz to be able to play the microtones (Perde) of Arabicmusic. These instruments have traditional tied frets that are movable, and 3 courses of strings.

Baglama

Baglama is the most commonly used string folk instrument in Turkey. It takes different names according to theregions and according to its size such as Baglama, Divan Sazi, Bozuk, Çögür, Kopuz Irizva, Cura, Tambura, etc.
Cura is the smallest member of the baglama family with the highest pitched sound. The member one size bigger than cura which gives a sound that is one octave lower than cura is the tambura. And the one with the deepest sound is the Divan sazi whose sound is one octave lower compared to tambura.

Baglama has three main parts called Boat, Chest and Neck. boat part is generally made from mulberry trees as well as from woods of juniper, beech, spruce or walnut. The Chest part is made from spruce and the sap section from homespun or juniper.

There are pieces called burgu (screw) at the end of the sap which is opposite to tekne part to which the strings are tied. These screws are used for tuning. There are pitches on the sap tied with fish line. Baglama is played with a Mizrap or Tezene made from cherry wood bark or plastic and fingers are used in some regions. The later technique is called Selpe.

There are three string groups on Baglama in groups of two or three. These string groups can be tuned in a variety of ways. For example in the tuning style called baglama Düzeni, the strings in the lower group give ‘la’, middle group strings and upper group strings give ‘mi’ notes. Besides this type of tuning there are

How to hold carp

Catching carp is an exciting, yet somewhat challenging task. Carp are a freshwater fish, and they love to eat and to be fed. But they are also a species of fish that tends to seek out shady, less disturbed locations.

Here are some things to consider if you want to catch carp:

* Do your homework – Research where carp are most abundant near you, then fish in that location.

* Bring more than one type of bait – Carp can be caught with worms, nightcrawlers, pieces of hot dogs, and doughy bread balls, among a myriad of other things. If you opt to use bread to create doughy bread balls, you’ll need a loaf of fresh bread and some water. To prepare a doughy bread ball, tear out the center of a piece of bread. Wet your fingertips sparingly, and work the light moisture into the bread until it becomes slightly doughy, but firm enough to stay on your hook.
* Never take your eyes or hands completely off of your rod and reel. Carp can grow to unbelievable sizes, and 20-pounders might be eyeing your bait while you’re opening a soda or munching on lunch. If a large fish hits your hook hard enough, it can and will steal your entire rig quicker than you can yell “rod and reel overboard.”

* Drop line to the bottom. Use split shots or sinkers to be sure your hook and bait are on or near the bottom. Picture goldfish in a tank as they swim along the bottom and ruminate in search of food. The same principal applies when fishing for carp of a much larger nature.

* Use extreme patience. Leave your bait in the water until you get a strike so that it becomes part of the carp’s scenery.

* Fish in the morning or evening. Even hungry carp tend to hide out and abstain from dining when the sun is high in the sky, especially in warmer weather.

Whether you enjoy catch-and-release or you’re fishing for dinner*, this fresh-water angler wishes you the best of luck. Come back and tell us your “fish stories” when you get a chance, and share your thoughts on the amazing carp at Pymatuning.

Happy Fishing!

Chess History

Many countries claim to have invented the chess game in some incipient form. The most commonly held belief is that chess originated in India, where it was called Chaturanga, which appears to have been invented in the 6th century AD. Although this is commonly believed, it is thought that Persians created a more modern version of the game after the Indians. In fact, the oldest known chess pieces have been found in excavations of ancient Persian territories.

Another theory exists that chess arose from the similar game of Chinese chess, or at least a predecessor thereof, existing in China since the 2nd century BC. Joseph Needham and David Li are two of many scholars who have favored this theory.

Chess eventually spread westward to Europe and eastward as far as Japan, spawning variants as it went. One theory suggests that it migrated from India to Persia, where its terminology was translated into Persian, and its name changed to chatrang. The entrance of chess into Europe, notably, is marked by a massive improvement in the powers of the queen. The oldest known texts describing chess seem to indicate a bi-directional spread from the Persian empire. In fact, the oldest known reference points to Shah Ardashir as being a master of the game, his rule was from 224 – 241 AD. This would indicate that chess was invented some time before his rule.

From Persia it entered the Islamic world, where the names of its pieces largely remained in their Persian forms in early Islamic times. Its name became shatranj, which continued in Spanish as ajedrez and in Greek as zatrikion, but in most of Europe was replaced by versions of the Persian word shah = “king”.

There is a theory that this name replacement happened because, before the game of chess came to Europe, merchants coming to Europe brought ornamental chess kings as curiosities and with them their name shah, which Europeans mispronounced in various ways.

* Checkmate: This is the English rendition of shah mat, which is Persian for “the king is finished”.
*Rook: From the Persian rukh, which means “chariot”, but also means “cheek” (part of the face). The piece resembles a siege tower. It is also believed that it was named after the mythical Persian bird of great power called the roc. In India, the piece is more popularly called haathi, which means “elephant”.
* Bishop. From the Persian pil means “the elephant”, but in Europe and the western part of the Islamic world people knew little or nothing about elephants, and the name of the chessman entered Western Europe as Latin alfinus and similar, a word with no other meaning (in Spanish, for example, it evolved to the name “alfil”). This word “alfil” is actually the Arabic for “elephant” hence the Spanish word would most certainly have been taken from the Islamic provinces of Spain. The English name “bishop” is a rename inspired by the conventional shape of the piece. In Russia, the piece is, however, known as “elephant”. In the Indian lingo however, the piece is more popularly known as oont = “camel”.
* ]Queen. Persian farzin = “vizier” became Arabic firzan, which entered western European languages as forms such as alfferza, fers, etc but was later replaced by “queen”. Incidentally, the Indian equivalent of “queen”, rani is used for the piece by Indians.

The game spread throughout the Islamic world after the Muslim conquest of Persia. Chess eventually reached Russia via Mongolia, where it was played at the beginning of the 7th century. It was introduced into Spain by the Moors in the 10th century, and described in a famous 13th century manuscript covering chess, backgammon, and dice named the Libro de los juegos. Chess also found its way across Siberia into Alaska.

Modern chess
Early on, the pieces in European chess had limited movement; bishops could only move by jumping exactly two spaces diagonally (similar to the elephant in xiangqi), the queen could move only one space diagonally, pawns could not move two spaces on their first move, and there was no castling. By the end of the 15th century, the modern rules for the basic moves had been adopted from Italy: pawns gained the option of moving two squares on their first move and the en passant capture therewith, bishops acquired their modern move, and the queen was made the most powerful piece; consequently modern chess was referred to as “Queen’s Chess” or “Mad Queen Chess”. The game in Europe since that time has been almost the same as is played today. The current rules were finalized in the early 19th century, except for the exact conditions for a draw.

The most popular piece design, the “Staunton” set, was created by Nathaniel Cook in 1849, endorsed by Howard Staunton, a leading player of the time, and officially adopted by Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) in 1924.

Chess’s international governing body is FIDE, which has presided over the world championship matches for decades. Most countries of the world have a national chess organization as well. Although chess is not an Olympic sport, it has its own Olympiad, held every two years as a team event.

Anneler Günü Tarihi

İn the United States Mother’s Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother’s Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year.
In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother’s Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother’s Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.
While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother’s Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May.
A flower gift to one’s mother on this great day- the mothers day, means a lot. Infact, a bouquet of mature blooming roses would be a better choice on this day since it implies gratitude. No other means of thanks-giving would replace a flower gift. To add a few words of gratitude, would mean much more. Here are some wonderful quotations to express the best of our feelings for our beloved mother.
